Our Top Tips for Living in a Small
When it comes to living in a campervan, caravan or motorhome, the limited space can take some getting used to. But don’t worry, sacrificing some of your square metres is worth it. In fact, most RVers find that they grow to love the minimalist lifestyle that comes with living in a small space. To help you get there, we’ve put together our top tips for making the most of your space:
Go Collapsible
You can get so many collapsible items these days that are super handy for camping and RVing. We’re talking cups, bowls, food containers, silicone storage tubs and kettles- yep you can even get collapsible kettles! All of these things may seem small on their own but they can really add up, especially when you have multiples of each. Check out this set of collapsible cups.
Make sure everything has a place
Before hitting the road for an extended period of time , we recommend setting aside half a day to organise your campervan and make sure everything has its own spot. When we live in houses or apartments, we can get away with a bit of disorganisation. You’ll quickly realise that your RV will begin to feel cluttered if you don’t have a shelf, cupboard or allocated spot for all of your belongings. While you’re on the road, your RV is your haven so it’s important to keep it feeling comfy.
Cull your belongings
Ask anyone who’s been on a few road trips or travelling full time. When you’re on the road, you will realise that you really don’t need much stuff. When you’re packing, we definitely recommend a Marie Kondo approach: if it’s not a “heck yes” then you don’t need it. Donate it or put it into storage.
Organise by daily, weekly, monthly
Some items are essential but will only be used on a monthly or infrequent basis, like your RV maintenance tools or your spare sheets. Store these at the bottom of your cupboards and containers so you don’t end up pulling your entire RV apart every time you go looking for your beach towel. Next, pack your weekly items and lastly, pack your daily items that you’ll need frequent, easy access to.
One in, one out
Every time you pick up something new while you’re on the road, get into the habit of donating or giving away something old to fellow campers. Chances are that when you hit the road your RV was near capacity so you won’t be able to sacrifice any extra space when you get something new. This will also help you to get into the mindset of thinking ‘Do I really need this?’ when buying new clothes or new décor for your RV.
Packing cubes
You know how we mentioned that everything should have it’s place? Packing cubes are a great way to do this for your clothes. You can separate tops and bottoms, winter clothes and summer clothes, clean items and dirty items, the possibilities are endless! This set on Amazon is affordable and comes with a variety of sizes.
Tiered hangers
If you have a wardrobe in your RV, then tiered hangers will definitely be your friend. This handy invention allows you to hang 5 pieces (or maybe more depending on which ones you buy) on one hanger meaning you only take up a fifth of the space. Trust us, they’re worth it!
