Don’t Go Road Tripping with Kids Before Reading these Tips
Road tripping with your kids is one of the best experiences you’ll have as a family. There’s nothing better than hitting the road, making memories together and watching as your kids learn from the world around them. However, we all know that road tripping with kids can come with its own unique set of challenges. No need to worry though, there are ways to keep your kids engaged and entertained while on the road. Check out these essential tips for road tripping in your RV with kids:
Get your Kids in on the Planning
Whether it’s a year on the road or a family holiday, a road trip means you’ll be making multiple stops. By letting your kids pick and plan one of the stops, they’ll feel like they’re contributing to the trip. This will likely help to get them more excited and lead to less complaining in the down time. Alternatively, you can give them choices at each stop. For example, you can ask if they would rather go to the beach or go to a local swimming hole that day. Just like adults, most kids like to feel like they’re having a say in their holiday.
Plan for Regular Pit Stops
It’s no secret that long journeys in your RV can be made that much more difficult by kids who are constantly asking, “Are we there yet?”. While it’s normal for kids to get bored on days when you’re doing a lot of driving, there are ways to keep their boredom at bay for a bit longer. It’s amazing what regular pit stops can do for kids. Having a brief change of scenery and the chance to stretch their legs every hour or so is guaranteed to stop their frustration levels from reaching boiling point. It’s also a good idea to run around with your kids when you make a pit stop to help release the energy they’ve got pent up from sitting in the car for an extended period of time.
Line Up Some Car Games
Speaking of keeping boredom at bay, car games are a classic favourite. While most of us probably resort to giving our kids games on an iPad or phone during long RV journeys, switching it up with some more traditional games every now and again will help to give the kids a bit of social interaction which will stop them from getting cranky. I spy, 20 questions and road trip bingo are just some of our favourites that are sure to keep the kinds entertained for an extra hour or so.
Pack Plenty of Snacks
Kids that are tired or bored are challenging enough but throw hunger into the mix and they’ll probably be nearing the point of a complete melt down. When heading out for excursions, hikes, day trips or hitting the road for long drives, make sure to bring lots of snacks and drinks with you. You might find that food or snacks aren’t always easily accessible, and if they are they might not be the healthiest or the most affordable. Before heading out, stock up on fruit, crackers, yoghurt and other foods with good nutritional value so that they’re tummies stay full.
Switch up the Seating Arrangements
When tackling long drives, it’s always a good idea to switch it up for a bit and have an adult sit in the back if possible. This is particularly helpful if you’re only travelling with one child since they might start to feel a bit lonely in the back. But even if you’re travelling with more than one kid, if they begin to bicker, getting an adult to sit in the back seat for an hour will likely help to get everyone a bit of peace and quiet.
