Here’s How You Can Keep Warm in your RV as We Leave Summer Behind
In Australia, we’re lucky to have RV weather all year round. The temperature rarely drops to teeth chattering temperatures even in the dead of Winter meaning that you can hit the road in your campervan, motorhome, or caravan any time you like. However, as we begin to leave Summer behind, there are still some adjustments you can make to ensure that your home on wheels remains at a comfy temperature throughout the cooler months. Below are our favourite ways of keeping warm in your RV:
Switch Your Curtains Out
Chances are you have some kind of window coverings in your campervan, motorhome or caravan. In Summer these are handy for maintaining your privacy and keeping the hot sun out, but now that we’re heading into winter you might want to switch these out for a set of thicker curtains. Opting for material that’s double or triple layered will help to keep the heat inside instead of letting it escape.
Use the Temperature to Your Advantage
Speaking of curtains, if you use them properly you can reduce heat loss by almost 20%. During the winter months, make a point of leaving your curtains open or your window coverings off. This will allow the sun to heat up your interior, then at sunset, make sure you cover your windows up. This will help to trap the built-up heat inside your RV, meaning you won’t have to worry about waking up shivering during the night.
Time to Rug Up
If you have floorspace in your RV, you’ll be surprised at how much of a difference this one can make. Adding a thick decorative rug to the floor will help to prevent heat loss through the base of your RV. Cold air also tends to sink towards ground level so it’ll be hanging around underneath your campervan, caravan or motorhome, but luckily your carpet will be there to block it from getting in. And, if that wasn’t enough to convince you, a nice fluffy rug will help to create a nice cosy ambience inside your RV during the cooler winter months. Double win!
Go hunting for leaks
Now’s the time to give the exterior of your RV a thorough once over to make sure there aren’t any sneaky gaps that will let the cool air (or rain) in. In particular, look at the vents, doors, windows, seals and joins. If you do find any potential spots that could let the heat out, you might be able to seal them with silicone rubber or foam insulation. Alternatively, you can take your RV to a service centre in whichever town you happen to be in and ask them to seal the gaps up for you. It shouldn’t be a major job that holds you up for long.
Invest in an RV-Friendly Heater
There are quite a few electric heaters out there that are cheap to run and don’t take up a lot of room. In a smaller space like an RV these heaters can make a world of difference on those particularly cool nights. Just make sure that you have it positioned in a spot where it’s safe and don’t run it for any longer than is recommended.
