How to Fund Life on the Road Without a Huge Bank Balance
Packing up and hitting the road can feel like one of those things that we’re not supposed to do until retirement, or at least until we’ve spent year after year saving. While we’re not saying that you should hit the road with nothing more than a hundred bucks to your name, you also don’t need to have a lifetime worth of cash in the bank. Today, more and more young people are hitting the road without even having to dip into their savings too much because they earn as they go. Below are just some of the ways that you can do that:
Remote work
In 2022, it’s easier than ever to come by remote work. All you need is a laptop and a reliable internet connection. The silver lining of the pandemic is that so many businesses have brought their systems and processes entirely online and have also embraced flexible working. Before hitting the road, look for a part time job that will allow you to work remotely. This will give you enough income to sustain your life on the road while also leaving you with time to experience what our country has to offer.
Similar to a remote job, you can also consider freelancing. A lot of people have skills they can offer to businesses like writing, marketing, administration, design, consultancy, bookkeeping, social media, photography, the list goes on. If possible, try to plan ahead and get a couple of clients before you hit the road so that you know you’ll have a bit of money coming in. And, if you’re looking for a place to get started there are sites out there specifically for freelancers, like freelancer.com and Fiverr.
Use your existing skills
Often, the skills you’re using to earn income now can also help you to generate income on the road. We’ve already spoken about remote jobs and freelancing but there’s also ways to leverage skills that are more hands-on. If you’re handy, you can offer your services as a handy man or woman to local businesses in the towns that you stay in. If you have experience working in the hospitality industry, chances are you’ll come across quite a lot of bars and restaurants looking for extra hands during busy periods or for large events. You could even pick up a temporary role as a labourer or a cook. When you go looking for them, there are so many opportunities to be found!
Seasonal work
Seasonal work is a great way to fund a once in a lifetime road trip around Australia for a few reasons. Firstly, there’s lots of it out there. We’re a country that runs on farming and agriculture which means that there’s usually always a job to be found. Whether it’s working as a farm hand, picking fruit or packing vegetables, there’s a lot of options out there. Secondly, seasonal work is another great way to fund your travels while also getting time off to enjoy the RV lifestyle. You can work for a few weeks then take a few weeks off to explore then head to your next destination and repeat the cycle. Lastly, seasonal work is a great way to meet people, make friends and get some insight into the local area.
Content creation
Let us preface this one by saying that content creation won’t necessarily help you to generate income immediately, but it can definitely help you to get by. In the age of social media, content creation has well and truly blown up, and travel content is one of the most popular kinds out there. By consistently creating good quality travel videos, images or blogs while you’re on the road, you can pick up partnerships with businesses in the travel and tourism industry. These partnerships will often supplement some of the costs of life on the road which helps you to keep your outgoings to a minimum.
What’s more, if you build up an audience and stick at it with your content creation, you actually can begin to generate a stream of income.
