If you’re a novice driver of an RV, particularly a caravan, it is highly recommended that you do a towing course before venturing off on your first trip away. Even if you have towed a camper trailer before, towing a caravan is an entirely different experience.

In Queensland, RACQ offers caravan driver training at their state-of-the-art training centre at Mt Cotton. Their courses include a weight assessment to help drivers understand safe weight limits. They use accredited, experienced trainers, and a discount is available if you are a member.

Every caravan needs a tow vehicle to get on the road, and it’s vital that you match your caravan to the vehicle you are planning on using. A ute or 4WD is normally acceptable as a towing vehicle. However, larger caravans need a more powerful vehicle.

There are several different towing terms with caravans, but the main ones to be aware of are aggregate trailer mass (ATM), gross vehicle mass (GVM), tare weight and tow ball weight. ATM refers to the vehicle’s total mass when carrying the maximum load recommended by the manufacturer. It is measured with the caravan unhitched from the towing vehicle and resting on its jockey wheel.

GVM refers to the maximum permissible weight of a vehicle when fully loaded. This includes the weight of the vehicle itself and any cargo, fuel, passengers and any other equipment or accessories that may be on board. Tare weight (or tare mass) is the total mass of the caravan with no load, unoccupied and all standard equipment and any fitted options. It is also measured with all fluid reservoirs filled to nominal capacity for service.

The recommended tow ball weight in Australia is around 10 percent of your aggregate trailer mass or a maximum of 350 kilograms — whichever is the lowest. Knowing what you can legally tow is essential, not just for avoiding fines but also for safety. Our expert team can guide you on the towing capacities if you are unsure.
